Come to Edith Stein!

Welcome to Edith Stein University for Teacher Education. Located in the east of the Netherlands, our school has over a thousand students who want to become great teachers. At Edith Stein (named after a German philosopher, also known as Saint Edith Stein), we care about the future. That’s why we want our students to work hard at their education and pass their knowledge on to a next generation. We’ve been working on making education better for decades and have always been one of the leading schools for teacher education.

At Edith Stein, we understand what being a good teacher is all about. You are responsible for teaching children about the world around them. Not just by teaching them math, geometry and drawing, but more importantly by teaching them about respect and their place in society. You are responsible for a future generation, which is a big challenge.

Learning to teach

Teaching methods are one of the key pillars at Edith Stein University. How do you make sure every child lives up to his potential? What can you do when you think a child might be dyslectic? Can you adapt to an ever changing society? At Edith Stein University we believe you need to keep evaluating and updating your knowledge to get the best results with every pupil. By being critical about your own behavior, you learn to make choices fit for a teacher.

Join us in Hengelo and make the most of your education. We offer you an extensive international program where you will be working with a group of around twenty fellow foreign and Dutch students. In a period of three to five months you will become a better international teacher by getting to know many different cultures and educational systems from across the globe and putting that knowledge to the test.

Our University lets students choose between the different denominations available in Dutch education: catholic, protestant-christian and public and special needs education. We also offer courses in different kinds of education such as Montessori, Freinet, Dalton and Jenaplan.

Facilities & Education

At our school, we offer you the best possible work environment. Use our computer areas to work by yourself or with a group, visit our in-house theater or music room and check out the identity center to learn all about different religions and lifestyles.
In your months in Holland you will spend time at school as well as at international primary schools. So you won’t just be learning about becoming an educator, you’ll be putting your knowledge to the test in front of actual students.

Become an international teacher

Expand your horizon by learning about education around the world. At Edith Stein we think it’s important to swap views on education with teachers and students from outside the Netherlands. After all: education is a very international affair in which teachers play a large role. Becoming a good teacher goes beyond knowing what’s going on in the world around you.

About Hengelo

The city of Hengelo has over 80.000 residents, which makes it one of the biggest cities in the region called Twente, near the border with Germany. Even though Twente is technically ‘the countryside’ of Holland, Hengelo and its surrounding cities have plenty to offer visitors, from large shopping areas with bars and restaurants, a football-stadium and a large cinema to remote slices of nature. And with Germany only a few miles away, a nice trip abroad is never out of the question.
Dutch people use bicycles as a primary method of transportation. This works well in Hengelo as it is a compact city. For those who don’t have a bike, there are other excellent ways of getting around like with buses and trains. Edith Stein sits in the center of the city, only ten minutes away from the train station, shops and nightlife.

Living arrangements

If you’re coming to study at the University, you’re going to need a place to stay. Edith Stein can provide an apartment for you with your own bike. To learn more about housing, please contact our International Office at internationaloffice@edith.nl.
